Around the 307
News, commentary, and other items of interest from the greater Wyoming landscape.
From the week of November 12th, 2023, here are a few news items from around the Cowboy State for your perusal:
This past weekend the 2023 Wyoming High School Activities Association State Football Championships took place in Laramie at War Memorial Stadium. Once again, our own Star Valley High School Braves came away with the Class 3A State Football Championship title beating the Cody Broncs 27-0. This is the Braves sixth State Championship title since 2015! Go Braves! Read all about the win and watch video highlights of the games at this Star Valley Independent link.
On Monday, the Joint Revenue Committee failed in yet another attempt to do something about Wyoming’s soaring property taxes. In front of the committee legislation proposing all property be taxed based on its fair market value as of January 1th, 2019, or when it was bought, whichever is later was rejected on a 7 to 7 vote. The proposed legislation would have replaced the traditional assessed valuation model. Opposition to the proposed legislation cited it as being a change in how property tax is calculated and not a real way to get after property tax relief. You can read the entire story here at Cowboy State Daily. All I know is that my property taxes sure aren’t going down…
Lastly, there’s a new recently released documentary from the University of Wyoming’s Wyoming Migration Initiative called Animal Trails: Rediscovering Grand Teton Migrations. The documentary was also co-produced by Grand Teton National Park (GTNP). The film is part of a new migration-themed exhibit at the GTNP’s Craig Thomas Visitor Center and chronicles large mammal migrations from the park to distant habitats in Idaho and Wyoming. Read more about the documentary here and watch the Animal Trails film at this Vimeo link.
That’s it for now ya’ll. Have a good weekend!
