Around the 307
News, commentary, and other items of interest from the greater Wyoming landscape.
From the week of November 5th, 2023, here are a handful of news items from around the Cowboy State:
During the first week of November our local Wyoming State Senator, Dan Dockstader, published an opinion column in the Star Valley Independent summarizing the Bureau of Land Management’s (BLM) proposed revision of the existing Rock Springs Resource Management Plan (RMP). The draft RMP released by the BLM Rock Springs Field Office will determine how 3.6 million acres of surface estate and mineral rights across 5 Wyoming counties will be managed for the next decade. The proposed RMP has garnered a scathing rebuke from our Wyoming Congressional Delegation who cite long-lasting and negative consequences to Wyoming’s economy, citizens, industrial base, livestock industry and ability to access lands within state borders if the BLM’s proposed RMP alternative is adopted. You can read the BLM Rock Spring RMP Revision here and submit public comments to the proposed RMP until January 17th, 2024.
Check out the stunning photos below taken north of Bar Nunn, Wyoming by Laura Redmond earlier this week! These night-sky phenomena are called Stable Auroral Red (SAR) arcs and were first discovered in 1956. Most of us are more familiar with the polar aurora more commonly known as the northern or southern lights. As these SAR arcs are still a relatively new discovery there is still much debate in the scientific community as to what produces them. One possibility is that the red glow is caused by the release of energy from the electrical current that encircles the Earth: the latter known as the “Earth ring current”.

Did you know that in May 1945 when the famed U.S Army’s Easy Company liberated Hitler’s Bavarian mountaintop stronghold, known as the “Eagle’s Nest”, Pvt Alton More of Casper, Wyoming (an Easy Company paratrooper) also liberated two photo albums embossed with the Nazi swastika? Those albums, considered to be the most sought-after lost memorabilia from World War II, belonged to Adolph Hitler. Pvt More brought the albums back to Casper where after his death, in a tragic automobile accident, the photo albums eventually disappeared. You can read the complete store here.
That’s it for now ya’ll. Have a good weekend!
