Here are your Around the 307 news briefs for the week of September 22nd, 2024:
On Monday, September 23rd, Devils Tower National Monument published this press release on a climbing fatality that occurred the previous day. The victim, a 21-year old climber from Wisconsin, was attempting to rappel the second pitch of a climbing route known as El Cracko Diablo when he fell and sustained major injuries. Devils Tower is renowned among rock-climbers as one of the finest crack-climbing locations in North America; in its 100-year climbing history there have been seven climbing fatalities (including this latest one). I confess I was rather surprised to read the latter figure was so low given how dangerous the sport of rock-climbing must be.

Wednesday, September 25th, the Star Valley Independent (SVI) published this story about a newly installed 1,500 square foot American flag flying 130 feet in the air off of Highway 89 between Etna and Alpine Wyoming. If you travel this road it is a truly magnificent sight to behold and I guarantee it will give you pause and perhaps even spark a little deep-seated love of country. I certainly hope so as—we can use all the love we can get in this never-ending election cycle!

And, on Thursday, September 26th, it happened again. And, by that I mean we have another grizzly bear vs. hunter encounter. This time the attack occurred in Wyoming’s Upper Green River Basin. The 31-year-old archery hunter from Georgia suffered severe bite wounds to his thigh during the attack which ended when he shot the bear dead with a handgun. Read additional details about the incident in this article from Cowboy State Daily along with their follow-up article published on Friday, September 27th.

That’s all for today ladies and gents! Thanks for reading and have a great week!
