Here are a few interesting reads from around Wyoming for the week of June 16th, 2024:
On Monday, June 17th, Cowboy State Daily published this article elaborating on what can happen when the ill-prepared take on the Shoshone River’s “Iron Curtain” rapids on a day when the flow is running at 4,500 cubic feet per second (cfs)! Even most experienced kayakers won’t run the Iron Curtain when its flow is more than 2,500 cfs. Did I mention that the inexperienced trio of tourists from Texas who got themselves into troubs were also using a cheap inflatable raft purchased at Walmart? I don’t think I need to say anymore…

Thursday, June 20th the Summer Solstice occurred at 2:40pm Mountain Daylight Time. What’s the significance of that you may ask? Well, as of Friday, June 21st daylight hours will be fewer and nights will be longer. Ah, just as summer ushers in, the march toward winter begins. Check out the graphic below that succinctly sums up the full meaning of “Solstice”—courtesy of the National Weather Service Riverton, office. Additionally, on Friday night, we were treated to a full Strawberry Moon which appeared bigger and brighter than ever and occupied its lowest point on the horizon than has been observed in quite some time (the latter due to the full moon coinciding with the Summer Solstice). Read more about this year’s special Solstice Strawberry Moon in this Farmer’s Almanac article.

Also on Thursday evening, June 20th, the annual re-ride of the famous Pony Express route between St. Joseph, Missouri, and Sacramento, California entered Wyoming from Nebraska. The event is put on annually by the National Pony Express Association. Pony Express riders will exit the Cowboy State at about 2am on Sunday south of Evanston. You can check out where the riders are throughout the entirety of the route by using this live interactive map. Giddy-up!
That’s all for today folks! Enjoy the beautiful summer weather! Be safe out there and thanks for reading. Have a great week!
