Here are Wyoming news items of interest for the week of August 25th, 2024:
Well, here we go! On Monday, August 26th, 2024 the first snow of the season fell on Togwotee Pass along U.S. Highway 26/287. [Below is a screenshot from a Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) camera.] The wintry weather must have been a welcome respite for crews still battling the Fish Creek Fire (now about 37% contained but still threatening the historic Brooks Lake Lodge). On Tuesday, August 27th, 2024 the National Weather Service (NWS) Riverton Wyoming shared this satellite image on their Facebook page of a rare absolutely cloudless sky across the entire Cowboy State! They also pointed out that if you look closely, you can see fresh snowpack on the highest peaks in the Wind River and Absaroka ranges! Zoiks!
And, in another sure sign that summer is rapidly on the way out, tonight, August 31st, 2024 at 8:30pm Mountain Standard Time the University of Wyoming (UW) Cowboys football team has their season opener against Arizona State! Lastly—here are a some Wyoming historical events (some well known, others obscure) that occurred during the month of August.
August 13th, 1896—Bub Meeks, Butch Cassidy, and Elzy Lay rob the Bank of Montpelier, Idaho and escape into Wyoming.
August 1st, 1915—The first automobiles enter Yellowstone National Park.
August 17th, 1964—Lady Bird Johnson dedicates the new Flaming Gorge Reservoir on a stop at Green River, Wyoming on a western tour.
