For the week of June 15th, 2025, here are a few Wyoming news items of interest:
At the end of last week there was quite the wild scene in Yellowstone National Park when a German Shepherd escaped from its owner’s vehicle and gave chase to a juvenile wolf! Fortunately, the two animals never made direct contact and while the young wolf initially ran as the German Shepherd barreled toward it, Canis lupus soon thought better of it, turned and stood its ground. The owner of the errant Shepherd was soon able to retrieve his dog with voice commands. Bystanders got some excellent photographs during the mayhem. Read all about the event here in this article published by Cowboy State Daily on Monday, June 16th.
Also on Monday, June 16th just as the sun was setting, the Carbon County Sheriff’s Office responded to a distress call from three teenage hikers who apparently became lost while hiking Medicine Bow Peak, the highest mountain in the Snowy Range at 12,008 feet. Sheriff Alex Bakken along with another volunteer hiked up the mountain in the dark, found the stranded hikers, and guided them back to safety. Be advised folks, even with the recent stellar late spring weather, many of Wyoming’s mountainous areas still have considerable amounts of snow. With that in mind, anyone heading out for a hike at elevation should plan their route and be prepared for inclement weather. Read more about this story here in this article from the Rawlins Times.
Lastly, Friday, June 20th, was the summer solstice in the northern hemisphere—hurray! When the sun set yesterday evening, those of us who call the Cowboy State home enjoyed the longest day of the year—meaning 15 hours of daylight! Alas, with that calendar date now in the rearview, it’s just going to get a little darker every day until we hit the shortest day of the year which in 2025 falls on December 21st. You can read more about the summer solstice in this article from Space.com. Enjoy!
That’s all for today cowgirls and cowboys! Thanks for reading and have a great week!
