For the week of September 8th, 2024, here are a few Wyoming news items for your perusal:
Monday, September 9th, 2024 during a fierce afternoon thunderstorm a lightening strike ignited a new wildfire just southeast of Thermopolis. By the following day, the uncontained Warm Springs Fire, had grown to more than 1,600 acres and was being targeting by air tanker drops in an effort to control the blaze. Read the Thermopolis Independent Record story here with reporting on the fire outbreak and early efforts to fight it.
Hope you didn’t try to take the Beartooth Highway into Red Lodge Montana this past week. Why you may ask? Well, on Thursday, September 12th, 2024 the first significant snowfall of the season, in the form of a fast moving blizzard, caused white out conditions and a brief closure of U.S. Route 212. The Beartooth Highway has since reopened, however, drivers should be ever-cautious when traversing mountain passes especially this time of year as we head into fall. Read more about this snowy highway event here in Cowboy State Daily.

And on Friday, September 13th, 2024 Buckrail published this story about an entangled elk sighted near Sagebrush Drive in Jackson. The Wyoming Game and Fish Department was notified and is currently monitoring the situation. This unfortunate circumstance provides an opportunity to remind all Wyomingites to please keep their properties as free as possible of entangling materials that could snare elk, moose, and deer. These large ungulates actively rub their antlers on trees, shrubs and other objects during this time of year in order to remove velvet. Netting, string lights, hammocks, and wire are particularly susceptible to becoming unwanted antler decorations. Let’s keep those big boys free of extra decor this fall—thanks y’all!
That’s all for today folks! Thanks for reading and have a great week!
