Here are a few Wyoming news items of interest for the week of September 15th, 2024:
The week did not start off well for a New Hampshire tourist in Yellowstone National Park (YNP). On Monday, September 16th a 60-year old woman strayed off trail near the Mallard Lake Trailhead at Old Faithful where she fell through the geothermal crust and received second and third degree burns. The woman was airlifted to Eastern Idaho Medical Center. This story, not surprisingly, made national news; you can read the YNP news release here.

Tuesday, September 17th, KHOL Radio 89.1 out of Jackson published this story on the status of the Teton Pass Big Fill Slide rebuild along Highway 22. You may recall a landslide took out the entire highway at mile marker 12.8 on June 8th, 2024 causing a three week closure of the roadway while a temporary detour was put in place. Since then the Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) has been working furiously to complete the permanent road rebuild. WYDOT’s original goal was to complete the work by November, however, they may have been overly ambitious in setting that date as the new completion date has now shifted to July 2025.
Also on Tuesday, it was Super Harvest Moon time in Wyoming! Yep, Supermoon 2.0 for the Cowboy State. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) defines a supermoon as occurring when the moon is within 90% of its closest approach to Earth. During this time, the moon stays close to the horizon for the entire night, making it appear larger than usual. Along with this week’s giant orb being the second supermoon of 2024 (apparently there was also one in August), the full moons in October 2024 and November 2024 will also be supermoons. Maybe I’ll catch one of those as I’ve missed the last two! Read more about this astrological event here in Cowboy State Daily .

That’s all for today buckaroos! Thanks for reading and have a great week!
