For the week of April 21st, 2024 here are Cowboy State news items of interest:
On Monday, April 22nd, the first reports began circulating in the media that famed Grizzly Bear 399 had emerged from hibernation and was out and about with her second-year cub “Rowdy” near Jackson Lake Lodge in Grand Teton National Park (GTNP). Grizzly 399, as many of you no doubt know, is the celebrated 28 year-old bruin who has gained an international following over the years while raising her progeny often within view of GTNP roads. Read this story in the Jackson Hole News & Guide to learn more about the matriarch’s 2024 appearance. And, here’s a link to some video (courtesy of Tatiana Coletrain) that is purported to be 399 and Rowdy this past Sunday evening in GTNP.
On Thursday, April 25th, Cowboy State Daily published this entertaining article about some early season touron antics in Yellowstone National Park. Check out the photo below showing a lone bison in the Upper Geyser Basin. There doesn’t seem to much else around except for the tourist within an arms length of the massive tatanka! Looks like we’re already off to a stellar tourist season!

Also on Thursday, Bob the barrel finally made it to shore at 7:15am after breaking free of the Fremont Lake ice about 6:30pm on Wednesday, April 24th. For the past 44 years, people in Sublette County in and around Pinedale have been guessing when Bob, a bright yellow steel barrel, will finally fall through the ice in Fremont Lake and float to shore. Whoever has the closest guess wins $500! Check out the Pinedale Lions Club Facebook page if you’re interested in getting in on the action as a ticket buyer anext year!
That’s all for today buckaroos! Thanks for reading and have a great week!
